Woman’s Shoulder Cloth
Beit Ana is a narrow shoulder cloth worn by women for ceremonies or special occasions. The textiles of Miomafo area of Timor, where this textile is from, are renowned for their deep indigo work and intricate motifs.
For the people of Timor certain animals, plants, rocks and water springs are sacred and become a clans totem. The motif on this cloth is called beso or frog which symbolizes the ancestors who are who called upon to help with ceremonies related to agriculture, lifecycle ceremonies and making a new traditional house. Only certain women have the right to weave this motif.
Warp ikat, single panel, open fringe, commercial cotton, natural dyes.
