Woman’s Shoulder Cloth

Beit Ana is a narrow shoulder cloth worn by women for ceremonies or special occasions. The textiles of Biboki area of Timor, where this textile is from, are renowned for their handspun cloths.

For the people of Timor certain animals, plants, rocks and water springs are sacred and become a clans totem. The motif on this cloth is called fut makaif refers to the hook or rhomboid motifs that were found on Dongson drums that were traded into the archipelago of Indonesia for sandalwood and spices.

Warp ikat, single panel, braided fringe, handspun cotton, natural dyes.
