Woman's Carrying Cloth

Sayut is a handspun high-status batik textile worn by women as a shoulder cloth or carrying cloth. The threads are spun from cotton grown locally and woven into a continuous three-meter warp gedog textile. After weaving, the motifs are drawn with wax and repeatedly dyed with natural dyes.

The motif on this textile is called lok chan relating back to the strong trade relationship between China and Java that dates back to the Ming Dynasty. A sayut textile with this motif may also be used as a wedding canopy.

Batik, single panel, macrame fringe, handspun cotton, natural dyes.
Made in Tuban, Java, 2015.
