Woman's Shoulder Cloth
This single panel shoulder cloth locally called senai, is worn for special ceremonies by the people of Ndona in Central Flores near Ende. It is made from natural dyes which the weavers in this area value over the common use of chemical dyes. Bou Sama Sama is a community of weavers who are both Christian and Muslim with common lineage and ancestors. Bou Sama Sama means “gathering together”.
The motif on this textile is called njara, which means horse. Horses are still used as part of the gift exchange between families during marriage negotiations.
